Forum: GratefulDead Subject: More Oz, Less Apollo

THIS AUD of 4/13/83 is quite good... the cymbals are VERY HIGH in the mix.... it is better than the other newer one -- also phil is boomy but it is partly by design... it is mickey's fault -- he made them sound a lot "bigger".... sometimes i really get mickey, sometimes i don't -- anyway you cut it he really had presence for a "2nd" drummer -- he sure changed their sound when he came back.... as a result i think Phil was forced to develop a new Architectural approach that was, in retrospect, FUCKING BRILLIANT -- and ironically you can hear him working at it at the beginning of scarlet, as he works out the kinks and ok, ok... "drops bombs" -- by this time he was becoming a master, and the PHIL ZONE was born! he would rarely flip off lead runs or take solos like he did up through 73/74.... instead he developed a whole new thing.

more Wizard of Oz, less Apollo...

if you get my drift... drifting... drifting.... a whole pail a' water....
